SPECIAL FIRE WARNING NOTICE

Due to the excessive and prolonged droug conditions and elevated fire dnager, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources deemes it necessary to reinstate DNR burning permits as of 10/15/24 in the County of Sauk and town of Excelsior until further notice,  Therefore, in accord with the provisionsoutlined in Wisconsin Administrative Code State Statute NR 30.03(3) and (4). A DNR annual burning permit is now required for burning in a barrel, a debris pile and grass of wooded areas as outlined by the permit.

For a DNR burning permit, visit dnr.wi.gov, and search 'burn permit' or call 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876).

There are no emergency fire wardens for Sauk County.  If you have any questions please contact any of the following Fire Departments, North Freedom Fire Department at 608-522-4570 or Reedsburg Fire Department at 608-524-3174.

Once an individual has a burning permit, remember to check the fire restrictions in the appropriate county after 11 a.m. each day before burning, including the legal burning hours, size limitations or if burning is suspended for the day. Small campfires for warming or cooking do not require a burning permit.
